Sprayed coats level themselves, so a roller leaves no stipple and a brush leaves no ridge. Fronts move to a filtered booth while boxes are sprayed behind sealed plastic, and that split is why cabinet painting ends up looking factory made.
Cambridge kitchens are mostly shaker or slab fronts now, and both shapes punish a brush. A wide centre panel shows every stroke in raking light from a window, which is why spray work is the standard on every kitchen we quote, from the condo galleys near Pinebush Road to the big islands in Southwood.
Sprayed Cabinet Painting Lasts Longer Than Brushwork
A brush lays a thick film that takes longer to harden and stays softer at the surface. A sprayed film is thin, even and dense, so it reaches full hardness sooner and resists the fingernail test that brushed enamel fails.
Contractors across Ontario put sprayed cabinet painting at ten to fifteen years of service and brushed work at three to five. The gap is not the paint. It is film thickness, the evenness of the coats, and the sanding pass between them.
Cabinet Painting Splits Between The Spray Booth And The House
Doors and drawer fronts leave in a rack. In a filtered shop they can be sprayed flat, which is the only way to lay a heavy coat without a run, and they are stacked on cure racks between coats rather than being handled.
Face frames, end panels and box edges cannot leave, so that half of the cabinet painting happens on site. The kitchen is sealed with plastic sheeting and tape, the area is ventilated, and the overspray stays inside the containment. Appliances, counters and floors stay masked until the last coat is hard.
Cabinet Painting Coatings Are Nothing Like Wall Paint
Two product families carry almost all professional cabinet work in Ontario. Waterborne alkyd enamels flow well, hold their colour and harden over about thirty days into satin or semi-gloss. Two-component polyurethanes mix a hardener into the coating and reach full cure in roughly a day, with the best wear and chemical resistance available in a waterborne product.
Both are low-VOC, well under the federal limits for interior coatings. Both are spray-only in practice at this quality level, and both are far harder than anything sold for walls.
Sheen is settled at the same time as colour. Satin hides more on a sun-facing wall, semi-gloss reads cleaner in a dark galley, and the sheen you settle on appears on the cabinet painting quote, so nothing is left to assumption.
Humidity Changes How Sprayed Cabinet Painting Behaves
Waterborne coatings slow down in damp air. Summers along the Grand and Speed rivers get humid, and above about seventy per cent relative humidity a urethane enamel can dry unevenly or go cloudy. Shop spraying sidesteps that because the booth is climate controlled.
On-site cabinet painting in July gets scheduled around the weather and the house air conditioning instead. In winter the opposite applies: dry indoor air speeds the coating but shrinks solid wood doors, which matters on oak and is explained on oak cabinet painting.
Ask To See A Sprayed Sample Before Booking
A sprayed sample door in your own kitchen light shows the surface better than any photograph. Look through the whole service list on the home page, then arrange a cabinet painting visit through the contact page or call +1 (226) 271-7770.
Cabinet Spray Painting Questions
Why spray instead of roll?
A gun lays a film thin enough to level itself, so there is no roller stipple and no ridge where a brush stopped. Thin coats also cure harder than one thick coat. The centre panel of a shaker door is where the difference shows most in daylight.
Is there a strong smell?
Waterborne coatings are low-VOC and much milder than the old solvent lacquers. Most spraying happens in the shop. The on-site portion runs behind sealed containment with the area ventilated, so the house stays liveable. The coating keeps curing for about a month, so use the kitchen gently.
Which coating gets used?
Waterborne alkyd enamels and two-component polyurethanes both spray well. Polyurethane cures much faster, often inside a day, so it suits busy family kitchens. The kitchen and how it is used decide which one goes on the quote, and the sheen is chosen at the same time.
