Slick factory surfaces need a waterborne bonding primer, not a standard undercoat. With the right primer, intact melamine and laminate take cabinet painting as well as wood does, and the finish holds at the edges where these materials usually chip.

Cambridge is full of this stock. Melamine boxes went in behind oak doors through the late 1980s, thermofoil fronts arrived in the 2000s builds around Southwood and North Galt, and laminate turns up in rentals and older condo units off Hespeler Road and Franklin Boulevard.

Peeling Thermofoil Cannot Be Fixed With Cabinet Painting

Thermofoil is a sheet of vinyl pressed with heat onto shaped MDF. Steam from a dishwasher or heat from a wall oven breaks that bond over time, and once a corner lifts the film keeps peeling underneath any coating you put on top. No coating will stick that vinyl back down.

There are two honest answers. The film is stripped back to the bare MDF with heat and the door is primed and sprayed, which is slow and only worth it on a few doors, or the door is replaced and painted to match through cabinet refinishing and refacing. Anyone who offers to paint straight over lifting thermofoil is selling you a callback.

Intact Thermofoil And Melamine Take Cabinet Painting Well

If the film is still bonded everywhere, the surface is ideal. It is smooth, non-porous and free of grain, so once a bonding primer grips it the topcoat lays down flat with no filler needed at all.

The primer does the work. A waterborne bonding primer built for melamine, thermofoil and glazed surfaces is what goes on, it recoats after three or four hours and needs several days to grip completely. It does not block stains, so anything with water marks or smoke damage gets a shellac-based coat underneath it first.

Melamine Edges Are Where Cabinet Painting Usually Fails

Melamine boxes have a thin edge band that chips. On an eighteen-year-old kitchen those chips are already there, and paint sprayed over a chipped edge follows the damage instead of hiding it.

Chips get filled and sanded flush before primer, which is a slow hand job on a kitchen with a lot of open shelving. It is also the difference between cabinet painting that looks new and cabinet painting that looks like a repaint. Skipping the filling is how a quote comes in unusually low.

Rentals And Investment Units Have A Different Cost Calculation

Landlords looking at a tired laminate kitchen usually compare cabinet painting against a builder-grade replacement. Paint costs a small share of that and runs a few days instead of a few weeks, which matters between tenancies.

The same logic applies to units in the buildings near Pinebush Road and along Coronation Boulevard. Small galley kitchens, ten to sixteen pieces, are described in more detail on condo kitchen cabinet painting.

Send A Photo Of The Edge And The Corner

One close photo of a door corner and one of the edge band usually tells us whether the material is thermofoil, melamine or laminate. See everything else on offer from the home page, send the photos through the contact page, or call +1 (226) 271-7770 for a cabinet painting quote.

Thermofoil, Melamine and Laminate Cabinet Painting Questions

Can peeling thermofoil be painted?

No. No coating re-bonds lifted vinyl, and heat and steam keep lifting it beside a dishwasher or wall oven. Those doors are stripped to the bare board or replaced. Intact thermofoil elsewhere in the kitchen can still be painted on a bonding primer, and you are told in writing before a deposit.

Why do melamine edges chip?

The edge banding is the weak point on melamine and laminate. Chips are filled and sanded flush before primer, and a waterborne bonding primer grips the slick face. That edge repair is the step that separates lasting work from a finish that fails in about a year.

Is painting worth it in a rental unit?

Paint costs a small share of a builder-grade replacement and takes a few days instead of a few weeks, which matters between tenancies. The same bonding primer and edge repair apply. Small galley kitchens of ten to sixteen pieces are covered on the condo kitchen page.
